Handicapped accessible holiday destinations

1. SOUTH OF TENERIFE
Playa de las Americas (Year-round-destination, also in wintertime). Miles of pedestrian alameda which is well suitable for wheelchairs.
Hotel VULCANO
Neat 4-star hotel, 300m from the sea with a wonderful subtropical winter garden.
Several handicapped accessible rooms (ground floor) with own terrace to the garden- and pool-side, own sun lounger and sun shade on the terrace and ramp for wheelchairs in front of every terrace into the garden. One swimming-pool is heated, access through stairs with handrail. All doors in the rooms are big enough for a wheelchair. In the bathrooms there are handholds but with a bath tube (take a bath board with you if necessary).
The airport Tenerife South is prepared for wheelchairs. After the landing you are being picked-up by a hydraulic bus which drives directly to plane doors. If necessary you may book a special transfer with a wheelchair bus from the airport to the hotel (ask the travel agency). Otherwise you may go by taxi (close range).

2. SOUTH OF TENERIFE
Los Christianos
Appartement facility MAR Y SOL
Handicapped accessible, suitable for wheelchairs. Therapy section, doctor, heated swimming-pools with lift in the garden. Mainly handicapped guests (a lot of MS-patients) with companions. Clinical character.
There are studios and apartments. The studios are much too small for wheelchairs, please book by all means an apartment. There are drivable showers but handholds are missing everywhere. Aids, also E-wheelchairs, can be rented (Attention, expensive!)
In my opinion the booking prices are too high compared to the 4-star-hotels in the region as well as all services and additional costs (Price/performance ratio is incorrect).
The apartment are about 500 m from the sea, can only be attained over a rising main street with a lot of traffic or over a gravel path. Parts of the arrangement have not been finished, but closed in the building shell. Self-caters have a long way to the next supermarket.

3. SOUTH OF TENERIFE
Los Christianos
Grand Hotel ARONA
The comfortable 4-star-hotel lies beneath the MAR Y SOL-arrangement directly at the sea and at the pedestrian alameda. It is limited wheelchair accessible. If required there are bigger rooms with wide doors – also in the bathroom – for wheelchairs suitable (but with bath tube).
All facilities can be reached with the wheelchair. There are some steps in the garden which can be avoided. (Hint: Talk with the reception and let yourself reserve a sun lounger in an area at the pool which is reachable for you).

4. ANDALUSIA/Spain
Place: La Antilla/ Huelva (Flight to Faro/Portugal, from this place approx. 1 ½ h drive by bus) – otherwise you may book a taxi with the travel agency (ask for the price) or rent car at the airport Faro (low cost!).
Hotel ISLANTILLA
Very recommendable! Nice 4-star-hotel, absolutely wheelchair friendly! The hotel has more than 16 special rooms for wheelchairs (8 rooms are on the entry side, 8 rooms lie to the seaside, therefrom 4 lie above the garden restaurant where there are animations in the evenings, the other 4 rooms with sea view are situated in a calm wing right to the seaside). All doors in the hotel are at least 1m wide. The rooms for handicapped people have huge bathrooms with a drivable shower, folding-seat and handhold in the shower and at the toilet as well as height adjustable wash basins.
From the leveled hotel garden there is an entry to the nice pedestrian alameda. (A Swimming-pool in the garden with a lifter and an indoor swimming pool). A dune beach with entries partly over slaps of stone or wood – which may be reached with some difficulties and with a companion. Newly there is a beach wheelchair available for handicapped guests.

5. LANZAROTE (year-round-destination, in the winter and springtime fresh wind)
Place: Playa-Blanca, Lanzarote-south, 1hour bus drive or rental car
Hotel PLAYA DORADA
Nice 4-star-hotel, directly at the beach, convenient for handicapped people. 6 special rooms for wheelchairs on the same level with the reception. Room 190-195 (Bathrooms with a wide sliding door, but bath tubs). Nice, huge garden with entry to a nice pedestrian alameda, which leads into the lovely, tidy fishing village Playa-Blanca. There are restaurants and cafés.

6. TÜRKEY
Place: Icmeler, 8km away from Marmaris, Flight to Dalaman, 1 ½ hours by bus. Rental cars are very expensive and not recommended because of the criminal way of Turkish driving.
Hotel MUNAMAR
Neat 4-star-hotel (the hotels do unfortunately not have a balcony), directly at the sea and at the 8km long pedestrian alameda (paving consists of slightly bumpy slaps of stone). Magnificent bay – sandy beach which belongs to the hotel directly in front of the house can be reached by wheelchair.
Nearby the city, anyway it is calm (book seaside!) No specific rooms for wheelchairs, but usable (hang out the bathroom door because of the passage expand). Friendly, helpful employees.

7. SOUTH OF SPAIN, Costa de Almeria
Place: Roquetas de Mar, Flight to Almeria, 1h by bus, taxi or rental car.
Hotel PLAYALINDA
GNeat small hotel, directly at the beach with a mile-long and absolutely flat pedestrian alamenda. In spring and autumn a lot of wind.
The hotel does not have specific rooms for handicapped people, but contingently usable for a wheelchair. Book in any case a suite (just with Jahn-Reisen)! Normal rooms are too narrow. The suites have big bathrooms and roof-balconies with own sun loungers. Very comfortable and roomy, but unfortunately all suites have French beds (1,80 x 2,00 m)!
