Assured MS can be asssumed when the Liquordiagnostic shows, that a typical inflammation exists in the central nervous system. In addition to that it has to be proven that the inflammation appears in several parts of the white substance of the CNS. This evidence can normally be proven with the magnetic resonance imaging and/or the measurement of the evoke potentials (AEP; VEP und SEP).
However, if one of the above named citeria is not fullfilled - as for example if the inflammation can only be proven in one part of the CNS then we speak of a Presumptive MS.
If in the whole course of disease only one symptom of disease has occured, e.g. a visual nerve inflammation, and other possible causes can be excluded, we speak of a Questionable MS.
Especially the technical developments within the last two decades have definitely improved the confidence of MS-diagnoses. However, it is still problematic and always holds a rest of error possibility. After all expert knowledge and experience of the physician are essential additives to the technical examinations.
